An NYC waitress shared a story of a couple visiting the restaurant that she thought was entitled.
“At an old job, I had a couple visiting from the midwest, and they drank like $60 worth of Diet Cokes, because they assumed we did free refills, and then they stormed out after paying and shouted at the Maître D’ about how it should be illegal to charge them. They still tipped though!”
To be clear: servers never offered second drinks, guests had to request them. and then we weren’t allowed to use the word refill, we said something along the lines of “another ORDER” implying the charge because this is one of those tricky social mores wrt money. But anyway, I think it’s good to not give out free refills for anything not water, or maybe drip coffee. I think Americans need to learn not to mindlessly consume things. It would help with the entitlement issues." -@madison_tayt

In my opinion, this couple was not entitled so much as they were misled. At restaurants in the Midwest, it's common for waiters to tell customers whether refills are free. That's common courtesy! They clearly trusted the waitstaff enough to inform them that they were being charged for each consecutive Diet Coke!
When someone criticized the waitress for withholding this information from the couple, she clarified that it was against company policy to tell customers that the refills weren't free unless they asked.
"Wow, it kind of seems like that rule is set up so people order multiple drinks thinking they get free refills. When I'm in a situation like that I just tell them anyway on the sly bc im not a piece of ****.' -@briarlovesweed

One user asked how many Diet Cokes they ordered, and the waitress was happy to share, along with some other caustic insults towards the couple.
“[They ordered] about 12 [Diet Cokes]. I remember thinking that they had spent more on Diet Cokes than food, because they were splitting like one entree because they’re brokies.” -@madison_tayt
Wow, doesn't she sound kind?

Who's in the right here? Was the waitress right to keep her mouth shut? Was the couple gluttonous for drinking so much soda? What do you think?
